New fisheries unit at Potlotek First Nations in Nova Scotia

June 14, 2012 - Deckhands for the fishery operations of Potlotek First Nations in Nova Scotia have become the newest members of UFCW Canada Local 864 following a successful organizing campaign by the UFCW Canada Eastern Provinces Council (EPC). The bargaining unit of over 40 First Nations in-shore fisherman was certified on June 5 by the Canadian Industrial Relations Board.

The new members harvest snow crab, lobster, tuna, shrimp and other shellfish. A portion of the fishery's revenue goes directly to support the development of the Potlotek First Nations community on Chapel Island in northeastern Nova Scotia. UFCW Canada Local 864 also represents deckhands at Comeau's Seafoods and Clearwater Seafoods in Nova Scotia.

"We want to welcome the new members at Potlotek First Nations," says UFCW Canada National President Wayne Hanley. "We appreciate their confidence and look forward to supporting the voice of First Nations employees at Potlotek, and at other workplaces across Nova Scotia."
