The gift of community

Toronto – December 21, 2015 – The Canadian spirit of compassion and generosity has again been confirmed, as the end of the year approaches and as a new life begins for the Syrian families we have warmly welcomed to our country.

Sharing our strength and supporting the hopes of our neighbours has always been vital to building our diverse communities. Yet, in our celebration we must also acknowledge that our struggle to challenge inequities across this land must continue undeterred.

We know that by working together we can achieve great things. We live in a great country that can support the hopes and ambitions of all who live here. But that can only happen as a national community that is fully committed to equity, respect, and a shared compassion to protect the most vulnerable.

We can be that community. We can be that Canada. As the holiday season approaches, let us share our goodwill and optimism for family, friends, neighbours, and newcomers alike.

From our UFCW Canada family to yours, I wish you all the best for the season and the New Year ahead.

Sincerely,

Paul R. Meinema
National President
