UFCW Eastern Provinces Council is proud to have hosted to the 39th annual National Defence Fund (NDF) Convention in St. John's between July 14-15.
Delegates are being hosted by Local 1252 members at the Delta St. John's where opening ceremonies were held with presentations from Elder Eric Flett on Indigenous teachings, and labour economist Jim Stanford on trade wars and tariffs.
A frontline workers panel was also held to touch on the impact of trade tensions and how they effect members wages and affordability.
Delegates also heard from UFCW International President Milton Jones who spoke on the current political climate in the United States and how it affects workers, as well as UFCW Canada National President Shawn Haggerty who touched on challenges facing UFCW members across the country.
The NDF Administration Committee then reviewed its finances, showing record level funds nearing $130 million. A resolution was then brought forward to raise picket pay to all levels, which was passed unanimously.
The group then broke off into various sector meetings which were held throughout the rest of the day.
Day 2 of the Convention opened with multiple workplace sector meetings for delegates including hospitality, flour and mill, soft drink/warehouse, meat processing, education and retail.
Following the lunch hour, the NDF general session resumed with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada fundraising raffle draw, with the top prize won by Local 1288P President Dan Smith.
Charlie Angus and the Resistance Tour then took the stage to speak on the ongoing issues between Canadians and the Trump administration, citing a history of the current presidential regime running on deceitfulness and being unwilling to negotiate. Angus reminded delegates that Canadians may be polite, but are no pushovers, and have historically fought back against fascism and helping other on a global scale when called upon.
Closing remarks were held by National President Shawn Haggerty, thanking delegates for their time and reflecting on lessons learned on bargaining better contracts and settling greater issues.
A big thank you to all members who were able to attend, and the members of 1252 at the Delta St. John's for being incredible hosts!
