UFCW Local 1252 members at Sunrise Animal Hospital have voted to ratify their first collective agreement, with 100 per cent participation from the membership throughout the process.
This milestone agreement delivers significant gains for workers and establishes important workplace protections and standards for the veterinary support staff who play a vital role in caring for animals and supporting clients every day.
The agreement includes wage increases of approximately 13 per cent over the life of the contract, with the majority gained in the first year. It also establishes clear wage scales and guaranteed annual progression, bringing greater transparency, fairness, and stability to the workplace.
In addition to wage improvements, current employees will receive a $1000 ratification bonus and secured important scheduling protections.
This includes schedules being posted 14 days in advance, as well as overtime protections and seniority rights related to layoffs, recalls, and job postings.
The agreement further strengthens workplace rights through paid holidays, improved vacation language, paid inclement weather closures for scheduled employees, progressive discipline protections, steward representation rights, and a formal grievance and arbitration procedure.
This first collective agreement represents an important step forward for staff and reflects the strength, solidarity, and determination of the membership throughout negotiations.
Thank you to the bargaining committee and all members for their professionalism, unity, and support in achieving this historic first agreement.
